Advanced Open Water Diver

This course may be taken when completing the PADI Open Water Diver certification. It is labled as, “PADI Advanced Open Water Diver” because it advances diving knowledge & skills.

That is what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. Students do not need to be “advanced” in order to take the course; the course is designed to advance diving skills, so students may immediately start when earning the PADI Open Water Diver certification.

The course helps build confidence and expands scuba skills through different Adventure dives. Students try different specialties—gaining experience under the supervision of a PADI Instructor. Students log dives, develop capabilities and find new ways to have fun scuba diving.

PADI (Junior) Adventure Divers who are at least 12 years old and have completed the Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive may enroll in a Rescue Diver course. Students also need to have Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training during the past 24 months. Students may complete this training during the Rescue Diver course.

If students are already Adventure Divers, students only need to complete two more Adventure dives to earn the Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

DETAILS

Academic

Students will plan a learning path with an instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure dives. There are two required dives—Deep & Underwater Navigation. Students will then choose the other three—a total of five dives.

The other knowledge and acquired skills will vary with individual student interest and the adventure—photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.

Equipment

Beyond using basic scuba equipment, students will need a compass and dive knife or dive tool. Students will also use special gear, depending on the chosen Adventure Dives. I am happy to personally explain the equipment that may be needed and to suggest additional gear, such as dive light for night diving, or lift bag for search and recovery diving.
