Much of the best scuba diving in the world is accessible only by boat. Whether a diver has never made a boat dive, or has logged dozens, the PADI Boat Diver Specialty course is a benefit to divers because boats in various parts of the world do things differently.
Scuba diving from a boat is fun and relatively easy because divers usually descend directly onto a dive site. Students who have a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification and are at least 10 years old, may enroll in the Boat Diver course.
Academic
The PADI Boat Diver course will expand boat knowledge from small inflatables to large liveaboards. Students will gain scuba diving experience by completing two dives from a boat and learn:
Boat terminology
Boat diving procedures and etiquette, including how to enter and exit, and where to stow gear
Boating safety, including how to locate safety equipment
Equipment
Beyond using basic scuba equipment, students will need a surface signaling device, such as an inflatable signal tube. Having a complete spare parts kit is also a good idea. The PADI Instructor and local dive center staff may suggest additional equipment depending on the type of boat and boat diving locations.
